At the unassumingly named ‘Number 5’ guests don’t have to work at finding the perfect view. On the contrary, they are forced to stop, kick back and relax as they fully enjoy the 270-degree view of Mount Buffalo in front, the Buckland Valley stretching out below and the peaceful forest behind this airy contemporary chalet. One wall of the living room is entirely taken up with panoramic sliding patio doors that invite the imposing surroundings inside. All other windows, however, are positioned at a height that allow optimal viewing only when seated. Thus tricked into decelerating, visitors can devote all their attention to soaking up the calm atmosphere of the alpine landscape.
Since first bringing the concept of luxury couples’ accommodation to this part of North East Victoria, The Buckland – Studio Retreat has slowly grown and evolved. Each new studio is built at a discreet distance, upholding the sensation for each set of guests of occupying a remote and secluded mountain retreat. The latest addition, an eco-friendly contemporary modular construction designed to owner Sabine Helsper’s specifications, features elements in keeping with the angular look of the other studios, yet offers cleaner architectural lines.
Warmth and character is added to the structure in the form granite stonework, Australian timbers and corrugated iron reminiscent of the heritage mountain cattlemen’s huts of the area. The sharp-peaked patio roof echoes the slope of the mountain dominating the scenery, a signature design element found throughout the property. The bold use of glass confronts guests with expansive views at every turn. It may be challenging for some but most enjoy settling down in the sprawling lounge in front of the fire with a glass of local wine. Rather than shutting out the landscape’s awe-inspiring vastness in pursuit of a snug and cosy feel, the architecture draws the natural beauty in, making it far more than just a backdrop. As is often the case with great architecture, not every visitor will immediately warm to the brave contemporary statement.
