If you’re currently in the Big Apple, you’ll be wise to take advantage of NYC Restaurant Week winter 2018, now underway at more than 375 restaurants, and running until February 9.
NYC Restaurant Week celebrates dining across all five boroughs of the city (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island) and offers foodies an opportunity to dine among some of New York City’s most famous restaurants at a lower price with three-course prix-fixe lunches for US$29 and three-course prix-fixe dinners for US$42 (excludes beverages, gratuities, taxes).
Essentials recommends CUT by Wolfgang Puck – the celebrity chef’s American steakhouse with a sleek bar and lounge located at the Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown. Here one might sample the Japanese style Massachusetts Yellowfin Tuna with Togarashi and Japanese Cucumber (pictured); Austrian Oxtail Bouillon with Smoked Bone Marrow and Horseradish or some nicely graded Japanese wagyu beef. While the menu doesn’t necessarily break new ground, the steaks and lighter option dishes are presented with excellence.
Pan-Peruvian restaurant Raymi is offering a diverse menu featuring Peruvian corn cakes, charred octopus and hanger steaks; or ideal for a larger group: a whole suckling pig served with corn masa tamales (Mexican styled steamed corn dough), charred scallions and seasonal vegetables. We’ve heard good things about the separate ceviche bar within the space, serving a variety of seafood cured in Peru’s famous leche de tigre. What’s not to love?
Or, get a true sense of manhattan decadence by sampling some new-style Japanese cuisine at Nobu Downtown, the flagship restaurant of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and co-owner Robert DeNiro. Situated in the heart of Manhattan’s financial district, Nobu Downtown’s ground floor sushi bar and lounge is set among neoclassical Botticino marble columns in part of the lobby of the building and features a gigantic floating brushstroke sculpture inspired by Japanese calligraphy. While Nobu is a 23-year-old NYC icon, it last year shifted to the grand former headquarters of AT&T, and now offers a two-level bar and dining experience.
NYC Restaurant Week is a bi-annual event that takes place in winter and summer each year – last year the event celebrated its 25th anniversary. Saturday dining is not included, Sundays optional.
